What size heavy duty planks do we need? I can scrounge some shorts lengths of thick planks, up to about 1m long, and possibly some old oak boards (of size 1500mm x 220mm x 45mm) but these oak boards are heavy, tough to hand saw, and nails bounce off them so would need pre-drilling ideally. They're also really too big to transport in my car so knowing how long the wood needs to be would be helpful as I can cut them to size beforehand.

I could also bring a large two-man cross-cut saw (for set dressing purposes only, I read the info on cutting wood on-site). Would it add to the setting? I'd rather know now than struggle to fit it in and find its not really appropriate (as I suspect), but I thought I'd ask.

If you have a quick look on page 1 of this thread you can see the firing loop frame that I have made- it is copied from illustrations & photos of Soviet fortifications- anything that could contribute to building more of these would be great. The Oak sounds a bit too much of a challenge, but any other material would be handy.

Well, what an event!

Trench looked superb, well done for all the hard digging!

Great cooking Huw and the cavalry was a nice addition.

Wish I could have stayed Sunday too - hope you all survived the banya - never seen it so steamy!!

Attached are a few small versions of pics I took, I'll send the rest to Ray to post on site.

Well done everyone, hope you survived Sunday!

A good weekend, the public enjoyed our displayed very much, the PTRD was a favourite as well.

I think I'll stay off the vodka for a while

Super weekend, apart from the moody weather, but I in a small way it added an authenticity to the misery of trench warfare. Glad I was able to get there! Thanks Huw for the luvely grub and 'tea on tap'

Thanks for the photos Paul. They do give a good idea of the feel of the place.
The weekend was great and the Banya was intense.
But remember "what happens in the Banya stays in the banya"

Now I'm off to the shed to work on making a nice circular door for Huws hobbit house.

Been offered a quantity of sandbags and will go to check out a source for some free rustic-sawn softwood planking. The problem with the latter would be transporting it. Does anyone have a pick-up? The kids were most impressed by the fact that my dirty uniform smelt like barbecue bacon.

Big thanks to everyone for a good weekend, especially Nick and Colin for lending out their kit for me to soil, and Huw for sustenance.

Huw, was there any tradition of the company/regimental surgeon also being the barber? Might be a good activity for a living history set in a camp.

Oddly enough, junior medical officers were referred to as Voennii fel'dsher, ('Field Shears') or an old name for 'barber surgeon'. But no they had a thoroughly modern set-up by the standards of the time.

Thank you to everyone who supported the unit, especially the Starshiy Sezhant for organising the trench digging. Thanks Huw for the cooking and the banya. Nigels leather thong is still giving me nightmares! Poor Colin may never sleep again!!
