Don't forget that we have a trench display beyond the tunnel where we will be educating members of the general public as we show them around our 'living history trench'.

Yes Andrei bring along the maxim. I will be bringing the units DP for the trench area so anything relevant that anyone has for this area to 'dress it up' bring it along.
The tank riders will be decided on the day.

I'm glad to hear that the DP will be present, as I was hoping to go through some of the skirmish order squad deployment tactics, and as the DP team is the core of the squad, it will be a little difficult without it.
I'm not sure how many are going to attend this year, but my idea is to go over the basic tactical squad drill one section at a time, to give each group the idea of manuevering is support of the DP and the squad leaders.

Doing a dry run with the DP and the squad is fine. Problem comes with trying to recreate the proper squad tactics during a skirmish. I think there is a problem with using blanks with the DP as they are too light to fall down into the gun from the magazine. Gas guns are another possibility, but the DP doesn't really lend itself to Gas as their isn't really anywhere to store the gas mechanism. We had thought of maybe scratch building a DT with the taller magazine being used to house the gas mechanism and maybe have the gas cylinders in a meshok on the gunners back.
Any thoughts on this?

Hi Hugh- it looks like we are 'walking the same path' to a cetain extent. I am going to investigate the feasability of doing a gas conversion on a DP with the cylinder in the meshok. I know a couple of people that I can sound out the idea with, and then take it from there.
The reason for welcoming the DP (above) was more from a field 'drill' point of view though, as when a Soviet squad deploys from open order column to skirmish order line, the key tactical component in the squad is the DP team, who deploy adjacent to the sqaud leader, supported by the riflemen, who are usually directed by the no 2 NCO. I have already agreed with Ray that the 2nd Guards squads will be practising skirmish drill this season, starting at Fort Nelson. I have also prepared a KZ article about it which should cover enough of it to give everyone the general idea.
Bejond that its just practice, practice, practice. I'm quite happy to pass on what experience we gain to your guys next time we meet.

Hi Nick
my idea was to try and put together a small squad of 6 (with our smaller numbers). Section leader with MP40 BF, Gunner, Assist Gunner with MN Carbine, and one 'guide man' and two riflemen with MN rifles.
We have been practising with the guide man moving forward, then the two riflemen covered by the DP. They in turn cover the DP gunners and leader as they move up. Move to about 10-20 yards of the target, the section leader stands up, gives the dramatic speech (as per the movies) then we all charge in firing from the hip.
The guy in the US who does the gas conversions sent me pictures of his DP conversion. The mechanism is attached to the underside of the magazine which isn't ideal as it can be clearly seen. I was thinking that maybe one of those wooden guns made by Bronemaster might be easily adapted.
