Hi Guys, my favourite wartime Soviet tune is "Small Light". I have just found a modern samba version sung at the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow in 2007 by Russian girl band "Fabrika". I just love it! Apart from they change the last line.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI676rNi-PU

You can hear the original here:

http://download.sovmusic.ru/m/ogonek.mp3

"Small light"

A girl saw off a soldier
Who had to go in a frontline position.
She said him goodbye
On the footsteps of a porch at the dark night.
And all the time when her fellow could see
Her house through a fog
A small light shined
In girl's window.

Guy was met by glorious
Front collective.
Comrades were everywhere,
Friends were everywhere.
But he couldn't forget
The known street:
Where are you, my beloved girl?
Where are you, my small light?

And the girl sent a message from far away
To the fellow.
She wrote that her love
Will never die,
That everything what they decided earlier to do
Will be fulfilled, -
The golden small light
Will not go out. [1]

And it became gaily
At heart of the soldier
As a result of so a good
Letter from her.
And fellow fights more hardly
The hateful enemy
For the Soviet Motherland,
For the dear small light.

For the Soviet Motherland,
For the dear small light.

1943

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] it is about "light of love" here

The Russian version (translit):

"Ogoniok"

Na pozitsiiu devushka
Provozhala boitsa.
Tiomnoi noch'iu prostilasia
Na stupen'kakh kryl'tsa.
I poka za tumanami
Videt' mog pareniok,
Na okoshke na devich'em
Vsio gorel ogoniok.

Parnia vstretila slavnaia
Frontovaia sem'ia,
Vsiudu byli tovarishchi,
Vsiudu byli druz'ia.
No znakomuiu ulitsu
Pozabyt' on ne mog:
Gde zh ty, devushka milaia?
Gde zh ty, moi ogoniok?

I podruga dalekaia
Parniu vestochku shliot,
Chto liubov' eio devich'ia
Nikogda ne umret;
Vse, chto bylo zadumano,
V svoi ispolnitsia srok,-
Ne pogasnet bez vremeni
Zolotoi ogoniok.

I stanovitsia radostno
Na dushe u boitsa
Ot takogo khoroshego
Ot eio pis'metsa.
I vraga nenavistnogo
Krepche b'iot parenek
Za Sovetskuiu Rodinu,
Za rodnoi ogoniok.

Za Sovetskuiu Rodinu,
Za rodnoi ogoniok.

Here is another old favourite, "Siniy Platochek", done again for Victory Day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wulynzrJ ... re=related

The original can be heard here:

http://retro.samnet.ru/music/phono/war/ ... tochek.mp3

"The blue kerchief"

It is a Soviet WWII time song, this song was very popular in troops.

AMVAS: Initial variant of this song existed before the war. If I'm right, it was written
on the music of Polish famous composer Yezhi Peterbursky
********************************************************************************************

"The Blue Kerchief"

(Translated by Andrey)

I remember how in that unforgettable evening
Your small kerchief was throwing from your shoulders
I remember how you were seeing off me
And how you were promising
To preserve the small blue kerchief
And let you not together with me,
My dear, my beloved girl
But I know that you are keeping
The blue kerchief
With love near at your bed-side.

Getting you letters,
I hear you dear voice
And see in my mind
The blue kerchief
Between the lines of your letter.
And your image often sees off
Me in a combat.
And I feel that you are constantly
Near me
With a loving look.

How many fond kerchiefs
We are carrying in our hearts!
Tender words,
Girl's shoulders
Are in our memory during a battle.
It is for them, for dear,
For beloved, for so desired girls,
A machine gunner is firing,
For the blue kerchief
Which was on the dear shoulders!

April of 1942

The Russian version (translit):

"Sinii platochek"

Pomniu, kak v pamiatnyi vecher
Padal platochek tvoi s plech,
Kak provozhala
I obeshchala
Sinii platochek sberech'.
I pust' so mnoi
Net segodnia liubimoi, rodnoi,
Znaiu, s liubov'iu,
Ty k izgolov'iu
Priachesh' platok goluboi.

Pis'ma tvoi poluchaia,
Slyshu ia golos rodnoi.
I mezhdu strochek
Sinii platochek
Snova vstaiot predo mnoi.
I chasto v boi
Provozhaet menia oblik tvoi,
Chuvstvuiu riadom,
S liubiashchim vzgliadom
Ty postoianno so mnoi.

Skol'ko zavetnykh platochkov
My sokhraniaem s soboi!
Nezhnye rechi,
Devich'i plechi
Pomnim v strade boevoi.
Za nikh, rodnykh,
Zhelannykh, liubimykh takikh,
Strochit pulemiotchik,
Za sinii platochek,
Chto byl na plechakh dorogikh!

Strochit pulemiotchik,
Za sinii platochek,
Chto byl na plechakh dorogikh!

aprel' 1942

They're all good songs Adrian.

One of my favourites has to be Polyushka Polye. Here's the link; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvtbVaRzMGo

Kalinka is also one of the greats :)

These posts are great but when I look at one I end up on you tube for hours at a time.
They really like their victory day celebrations in Russia don't they.
