Proper Soviet cloth maxim belts are hard to find and can be quite expensive... oh and the rounds in a maxim belt are 7.62x54R - the same round as the MN uses... hence its a quick way of looking like a Mexican bandit
I remember the story of one of our Comrades from Za Oberonya with a maxim belt... and others following him around all weekend picking up the rounds as they fell out of it...
The reason why the Maxim was converted to use the SG-43 Gorunov steel ammo belts is because the cloth ones stretch after a few uses and misfeed... (The SG-43 was designed to replace the Maxim)
I can't remember if the Maxim was ever converted to steel belts during the GPW, but certainly post-GPW they were and all the ones you see reenactors with now have been...

MG34 are the only US supplier of maxim cloth belts that I have ever seen.
I just got a friend in the states to order a few and then post them on.
Watch out on USA e-bay as well.
All the Maxims currently coming out of the Ukraine were converted during post war rebuilds to take metal belts. If buying metal belts remember that there are war-time and post-war patterns of these as well.

Hi Neil, would it be possible for you to show a pic of a wartime vs postwar metal belt? I would be interested to know the differences.
Cheers, Ade.

By Lenin that is more info than I ever thought I needed or even existed on steel Soviet MG belts!
Have tucked a copy of that in my anorak though so I can suck air through my teeth next week at W&P whilst looking at stuff on dealers stalls tho

That is a very good article the link to which I have published before on this forum.
Out of the 5 or 6 boxes and belts I have purchased over the years one turn out to be the 100% war-time pattern.
