Bought this book recently and it's really dry but there's good stuff on recruitment, equipping and training if you stick with it.

I'll warn you it is very dry - you'll be reading Glantz and Erickson for light relief! But there are some good bits on the makeup of the army.

Thanks fo the heads-up on this one Sasha- very worthwhile book- I have read very widely on the GPW & its nice to see a new & well researched perspective- some of the statistical analyisi is actually interesting.

I think everyone interested in the GPW should read this- it explains how the Soviets 'did it' on a macrocosmic scale.

Thanks! I've put it, and a few others in the series, on my Amazon wishlist over here in the U.S.
