Hi Chaps,
I was watching 20th Century battlefield yesterday and the featured battle was Stalingrad, right at the end it showed some strange vehicles, box like bodies but with 4 ski's or small caterpillars instead of wheels, they were going quite fast. Does anyone have any idea what they were?

All the best,
Trenchers

The glorious RKKA did have some progressive vehicles, including Aerosleds- a kind of ski mounted armoured box with an old (i.e. obsolete, rather than second hand) aircraft propeller mounted on the back for propulsion. I think :? there were at least 2 types- a light & heavy armoured variants. They were armed with machine guns, and mainly used in the north as winter recce vehicles. The caterpillar ones may have been artillery tractors- an early war prime mover- most were destroyed during barberossa. It is worth bearing in mind that most war time stock footage used in documentaries is 'random', and may not relate to the region or year that the documentary was portraying.

I'm sure someone can supply some weblinks or bibliography.
