I've heard rumour of it, but never seen any evidence to support it - and thats both during the GPW and also throughout the Cold War period!

There was supposd to be an equivalent of the PX/NAAFI- but with all things Soviet it is difficult to assess how widespread & well organised it would have been- Fraser talked to me about it once- maybe worth pm-ing him about it to get some literary references- I'll trawl through some more memoires & see if any refer to this.

There's info on this in Catherine Merridale's Ivan's War. I think there's even a related photo.

Were they amphibious? I can see them crossing en masse under fire across the Dnepr :D

The armoured assault version of the mobile tea-shop wasn't deployed until spring 1945, long after Dnepr crossing

I understand that airborne canteen & bar facilities were dropped in at key startegic locations during operation August Storm, to ensure that the rapidly advancing Soviet Heroes would be assured of a good glass of Narkom's and bowl of Shchi after a hard day of Jap bashing. Apparently Fraser has an original menu from one of these facilities.

I'm begining to think that this thread has run it's course, and degenerated into silliness. It's all Kozlov's fault.

Then I can see I have achieved my quota and can now rest for an hour before starting my work again!
