I have started preparing a small manual on wartime first aid and would welcome any suggestions and advice on what reenactors would consider useful content.

I remember seeing in a cadet manual how to make an improvised stretcher out of two sticks/rifles and two jackets/great coats you just fasten the jackets up and turn the sleeves in so they are on the inside of the jacket then you just thread the sticks through the sleeves and ta-da instant improvised stretcher.

I dont know if that was the kind of thing you were after but i thought i'd throw it in anyway

I have an illustration of it that I will include. It seems mad though to lash 4 rifles and two greatcoats into a stretcher that then weighs almost 50 pounds when you could move them as easily in a plash that weighs about 2.

If you can lay your hands on an old Red Cross 1st aid manual it'll have all you need to know of how things were done in the field. I have one dated 1914 and a WW2 issue somewhere. If theres anything in particular I'll look it up for you if you wish; that is when I find the darn books

Are they Red Cross or RAMC? I am particularly interested in any description of artificial respiration techniques.

Hi Huw, I have my Uncle Hugh's RAMC manual. He was at Dunkirk, North Africa and Italy. I will see what it contains.

Cheers, Ade.

Huw,
The RAMC used a form of artificial resus called Schafer's method. Are you familiar with it ?

Just found the books!! They're Red Cross manuals. The 1914 issue is mainly on making improvised stretchers and other methods of transporting wounded. Improvised shelters and beds, setting up a field hospital, hygiene, use of tourniquets etc. Also how to use leeches and some recipes for feeding the patients! The other is 1938 issue and does have a section on artificial respiration, Schafer's Method, much alike to the method used for drowning (should find this on the web). Theres also the usual treatment for different types of fractures, haemorrhaging and other injuries and various bandaging techniques.

I probably wont be able to come out to play until Fort Nelson, so could bring the books along then if you're attending. I got the manuals off good old Ebay; worth having a regular look whats for sale, also second hand book shops can turn up with the unexpected!

The Accolytes of the Dark Wave welcome Bob H R to the 'Hospital'. He shall be initiated into the Arcane Ritual at level of 'Knowing of the Cup' and shall sit at Her left hand in the role of Archimandrate and Chief Clerk.

He joins those others already enlightened and so enobled.
