Very dark (in fact Navy) blue. Don't go for the mid blue ones, they're for paras and long post war.

Well, technically its "navy blue" funnily enough... as opposed to "sky blue" for the VDV when they were reformed post GPW.

And its spelt "telnyashka"

Well don't believe some of the crap written on the internet is all I will say. Even some of it without spelling mistakes is wrong ;-)

Navy blue, sky blue, kelly green and brick red telnyashkas have all been worn by various Soviet and Russian Federation troops at various points. I can tell you which and when if you really want to know.... but only the navy blue ones were worn before and during the GPW.

Black ones have never been worn by any of them at any time.

I saw a brick-red striped telnyashka on ebay a few nights ago, and thought it was a knock off for tourists! Could you tell me who wore them as my post-91 knowledge is almosy non-existant.

It is worn as parade dress for some VV MVD units - I say *some* as there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to the pattern whatsoever!

Its not just the elite units like the OSN and equally you see the OSN wearing blue telnyashkas on parade too...

Post 1991 things really have got very strange!

I am lost now. Is it true that the telnyashka could be worn by infantrymen as an undershirt or is that just another reenacting convenience.

As far as I know Huw, it was allowed to be worn by ex Naval men fighting as Infantry.

Cheers, Ade.

So shouldn't really be seen in any numbers. I'll have to get a white undershirt.

I would really agree. Walter and I only wore our's at Peak Rail this year due to our white undershirts failing apart at Kelmarsh Hall.

Cheers, Ade.

I did have an interesting conversation with Bair about the opening scene in Zvezda, where you have the horse-riding Naval Infantry scout, and he pointed out that during the war, all three elements were 'fashionable' amongst Red Army personnel, so soldiers would attempt to buy/bargain for/steal Cossack, Marine and Scout kit to impress the crowds either at home or if on a brief leave behind the lines. So really, it is possible for standard infantry to wear them, but be prepared to be laughed at by your slavs, rather like someone from Bedford wearing a Man U shirt.
